Loopy about Lupe

There comes a point in time when you realise you are officially old. Don’t laugh — you’re over the hill if you can remember mix-tapes or Rubik’s cubes.
I’ve recently escaped from a long musical hiatus. From possessing knowledge and passion for music to not knowing what was happening! I had visions of myself in the nursing home still rocking out to Nirvana.

Interestingly — or rather embarrassingly — it was the OC that piqued my interest in music again. Yes. I know.I then found a band-mate. We started talking when we realised we were at the same Mudhoney gig the previous night. Did you like Kyuss? Did you see Fugazi? Sonic Youth? Jane’s Addiction? Now she scours the street press and I visit blogs to discover new bands.

Due to renting Dave Chappelle’s Block Party recently, I have a newfound addiction to Lupe Fiasco. His subject matter supercedes most in the genre, for instance in Conflict Diamonds he describes the human cost of mining. Also what sets him apart is his portrayal of women — they’re smart and sassy. Just as well, since his contemporaries include Jill Scott and Erykah Badu.

Do you think your awareness of music declines with age and responsibility? I asked two friends if they knew about Lupe and it drew blanks. So it’s not only me… he was only nominated for a Grammy or something…

Let me know how you find new tunes and what you’re into right now.
